A new community initiative launching this month in the Netherlands seeks to address growing concerns around mental wellbeing and dementia care through accessible resources and preventative programs. The “Brain Library” program, a unique collaboration between local government, healthcare organizations, and public libraries, will offer a series of events throughout January focused on mental health, nutrition, and support for those living with dementia and their families. The program’s launch comes as the Netherlands continues to expand its robust mental healthcare system [[2]] and innovate in dementia caregiving approaches [[1]].

A new initiative in the Netherlands aims to bolster mental wellbeing, promote healthy lifestyles, and provide support for those affected by dementia. The “Brain Library” program, a collaboration between the Municipality of Midden-Groningen, Kwartier Zorg en Welzijn, and the local library, will launch a series of events beginning January 16.

The program kicks off on Friday, January 16, with a lecture by Rogier Hoenders titled “Brain in Balance,” held at the Medisch Centrum Hoogezand-Sappemeer. Addressing mental health is increasingly important as communities grapple with the rising rates of stress and anxiety.

On Saturday, January 24, the program will introduce “Appeltje Eitje” (Apple Egg), an initiative focused on making healthy eating accessible and affordable. “We started working with the municipality on a recipe booklet for Appeltje Eitje,” said Natasha Chistyakova of the library. “The underlying idea is that healthy eating doesn’t have to be expensive.” The event will also highlight the various activities organized through the initiative.

January 31 will see the launch of the podcast “Lost in Your Head,” a series of stories and conversations centered around dementia. “We have six participants and have been working on this for about a year,” Chistyakova explained. The goal was to create a resource for individuals and families navigating the challenges of dementia, “so that people can find each other.” With the global population aging, the need for dementia support resources is growing.

The podcast features contributions from a notary, Dorothee Hopma, founder of the Brain Library, and local council member Evert Offereins. Production of the podcast was supported by DIG050.
