Surgeries have been postponed at Jeroen Bosch Hospital in Den Bosch this week due to increased patient volume. The hospital is experiencing a rise in patients presenting with flu symptoms and other respiratory infections, a spokesperson stated.
The postponed procedures are those “that can be moved medically and rescheduled later,” the hospital explained. Urgent surgeries, including oncological interventions, and acute care continue as scheduled. This situation highlights the strain that seasonal illnesses can place on hospital resources and the difficult decisions healthcare providers must make to prioritize patient care.
As a precaution, some surgeries have also been cancelled for Monday, coinciding with the start of Carnival celebrations. “Experience has shown that this period often leads to a further increase in flu-related complaints, among both patients and staff,” the hospital noted.
Other hospitals across the country are also postponing surgeries due to the flu. A flu epidemic has been declared in the Netherlands as of Wednesday, according to reports.
