A 3D model of the Human Papillomavirus
In recognition of International Women’s Day, the ULSS 9 health authority is promoting preventative health measures. As part of this effort, free vaccinations will be offered on Wednesday, March 4th and Thursday, March 5th, in observance of International HPV Awareness Day, established by the Papillomavirus Society IPVS to raise awareness about the importance of preventing HPV-related diseases. The vaccination will be available to women under 25 and men under 26 at various ULSS9 locations.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection in both men and women. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified HPV as a carcinogen in 1995. It is estimated that HPV is responsible for nearly 100% of cervical cancers, 88% of anal cancers and a significant portion of other cancers such as vulvar, vaginal, and penile cancers in men. While most HPV infections are transient and asymptomatic, persistent infection can lead to benign and malignant lesions of the skin and mucous membranes.
Yet, most HPV-related cancers are preventable through vaccination and screening. This highlights the importance of proactive health measures to reduce cancer risk.
The Vaccine
Vaccination is the most effective tool for preventing these infections. The HPV vaccine is actively offered to girls and boys at age 11, but can also be requested free of charge beyond this age: for girls up to 26 years of age (25 years for men); and in the presence of particular risk conditions, without age limits.
In observance of International HPV Awareness Day, vaccinations against HPV will be available on Wednesday, March 4th and Thursday, March 5th, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the outpatient clinics of the ULSS 9 Public Health and Hygiene Service, by appointment, and free of charge for women under 26 and men under 25.

Early Diagnosis
screening allows for the early and timely diagnosis of any lesions to the cervix caused by the human papillomavirus. When diagnosed early, cervical cancer is one of the most successfully curable forms of cancer. Screening aims to identify precancerous lesions of the cervix and is offered free of charge for the entire diagnostic, treatment, and care process.
Women vaccinated against HPV before the age of 15 with two doses in the Veneto region are invited for their first screening test directly at age 30 with an HPV test, which should be repeated every 5 years until the age of 64.
Women who have not been vaccinated are instead invited for a Pap test every 3 years, starting at age 25 and continuing until age 29, then proceeding with the HPV test.
Women up to 26 years of age are also offered free HPV vaccination when accessing screening.
ULSS 9 encourages people to participate in screening. If a user has not received an invitation at home or in their electronic health record, they can contact the screening center at 045 6712016 (Mon-Fri 8 AM-4 PM) or via email ([email protected]).
