Dense fog has disrupted travel across several regions of Hubei province, prompting authorities to close over 20 highway toll stations and issue widespread warnings. The disruptions, reported on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, are impacting both road and public transportation, as a significant weather system blankets the area.
The Hubei Provincial Meteorological Station issued a yellow fog warning for the city of Jingmen, according to reports. A similar warning was similarly issued for the Shennongjia Forestry District, a county-level administrative division within the province, as reported by Sina Finance.
The fog has led to the temporary closure of more than 20 toll stations on Hubei’s highways, causing significant traffic delays. According to Xinhua Net, traffic management has been temporarily implemented due to the hazardous conditions.
In Wuhan, the city’s public transportation authorities have implemented measures to ensure safe commutes during the morning rush hour, often referred to as the “Little New Year” period. SOHU News reports that these measures are designed to mitigate the impact of the fog on commuters.
The widespread fog warnings and transportation disruptions come as Hubei province is also under alert for a cold wave, according to on.cc East Net. The combination of cold temperatures and dense fog is creating challenging conditions for travel throughout the region.
Looking ahead, the completion of highway projects like the Jingsha Expressway, which began construction on September 29, 2025, is expected to improve transportation infrastructure in the province. As reported by Tencent News, this expressway aims to reduce travel time between Jingmen and Wuhan to under two hours. The planned completion of the Wujingyi Expressway by June 30, 2027, is projected to shorten the journey between Shayang and Wuhan to just one and a half hours, according to Baidu Baike. These infrastructure improvements are intended to alleviate traffic pressure on existing highways and strengthen economic ties within the region.
