IKEA’s enterprising rollout of Matter-compatible smart home devices is running into early snags, with numerous users reporting significant connectivity problems. The Swedish furniture retailer debuted its updated product line in November, aiming to simplify the ofen-fragmented smart home landscape, but reports suggest the transition hasn’t been smooth. Connectivity issues range from initial pairing failures to intermittent disconnections, raising questions about the stability of the new platform and the broader implementation of the Matter standard.
Furniture giant IKEA’s recent foray into next-generation smart home technology is facing significant hurdles, as users report widespread connectivity issues with its new Matter-compatible devices. The company debuted the new line in November, signaling a shift away from its previous reliance on the Zigbee protocol.
Connectivity Problems Plague New Devices
The Matter standard aims to streamline communication between smart home devices from different manufacturers, but early adoption hasn’t been seamless. Reports of pairing failures and intermittent disconnections began surfacing on online forums like Reddit, and were further detailed in a recent review by The Verge. The publication tested several new IKEA products, including Bilresa buttons, Myggspray motion sensors, Timmerflotte temperature/humidity sensors, and Kajplats bulbs.
Out of the six devices tested, only two – a bulb and an Alpstuga air quality monitor – connected to the network successfully. The remaining devices either failed to connect entirely or experienced significant difficulty establishing a stable link. The reviewer tested compatibility with Apple TV, Amazon Alexa, and IKEA’s own Dirigera hub.
The Verge’s review quickly prompted a flood of similar complaints on Reddit, with users describing identical problems. Many reported that devices would freeze during the connectivity check and fail to register on the network. Others found that the Dirigera hub wouldn’t even detect the new products during setup. This highlights the challenges of implementing a universal standard across diverse hardware and software ecosystems.
Users also reported unreliable connections, with sensors and buttons frequently disconnecting after initial periods of normal operation. The issues appear to be inconsistent, with some experiencing problems specifically when connecting to Apple’s HomeKit, while others found their sensors stopped functioning after integrating Home Assistant.
One user shared an experiment on Reddit, purchasing 60 Bilresa buttons in three separate batches. Only 31 successfully connected to the network, indicating a significant failure rate. The user noted inconsistencies between batches, with one batch proving almost entirely unusable while the majority of buttons in another batch connected without issue.
IKEA acknowledged the issues to The Verge, stating that a dedicated team has been assembled to address the connectivity problems. The company is collaborating directly with the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the consortium behind both Zigbee and Matter standards.
