Indonesia’s Gaza Peacekeeping Deployment Awaits Prabowo’s Order

Jakarta is weighing a potential contribution to an international peacekeeping force for Gaza following a United Nations Security Council resolution authorizing such a deployment. The move, spurred by a U.S.-proposed framework for stabilizing the region, now awaits final approval from President Prabowo Subianto, with Indonesian officials indicating readiness to participate based on the nation’s extensive experience in multinational peacekeeping operations. While preparations are underway, deployment hinges on either a direct UN mandate or sign-off from the United States, currently leading the initiative.

JAKARTA – Indonesia is awaiting direct instructions from President Prabowo Subianto regarding the potential deployment of peacekeeping forces to Gaza, officials said Wednesday, November 19, 2025. The move comes after the United Nations Security Council approved a draft resolution proposed by the United States outlining a security and governance framework for the region, potentially involving an international force.

The UN Security Council’s decision marks a significant step toward stabilizing Gaza after a prolonged period of conflict, and could pave the way for a future Palestinian state. The resolution authorizes the formation of an international stabilization force to secure Gaza, establishes a transitional authority under U.S. oversight, and opens possibilities for a future independent Palestinian state.

“All decisions remain under the direction of the President,” stated Colonel Rico Ricardo Sirait, Head of the Defense Ministry’s Information Bureau, when contacted for comment. “However, the Indonesian government is prepared to contribute, in line with our capacity and extensive experience in peacekeeping missions.”

While awaiting President Prabowo’s decision, the Defense Ministry and the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) are focusing on internal preparations, including assessing troop requirements and logistical readiness for a potentially complex stabilization operation. The development underscores Indonesia’s willingness to play a role in international efforts to address the humanitarian crisis and security challenges in Gaza.

According to Sirait, Indonesia’s involvement would be contingent upon either a direct mandate from the United Nations or approval from the United States, which is spearheading the initiative for an international stabilization force. “The Defense Minister has also affirmed that Indonesia can participate if either of these conditions is met,” he said.

No firm timeline has been established for the potential deployment of Indonesian peacekeepers to Gaza, officials confirmed. “Although the UN has adopted a resolution opening the possibility of deploying international forces, the national political decision remains a determining factor,” Sirait added.

Therefore, all mechanisms and plans are currently under internal discussion within the Defense Ministry and TNI while awaiting President Prabowo’s guidance on timing, the nature of Indonesia’s contribution, and the specifics of its involvement.

UN Security Council

The UN Security Council on Monday, November 17, 2025, approved the draft resolution presented by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a security and governance mechanism for Gaza. The vote represents a key moment in international efforts to address the ongoing crisis and establish a path toward lasting peace.

The resolution establishes a Peace Council as a transitional authority, to be led by Trump, though its full structure has yet to be defined. It grants broad authority to the international stabilization force to oversee borders, maintain security, and implement demilitarization, with authorization valid through the end of 2027.

The move is considered crucial in affirming international support for stabilizing Gaza following two years of conflict. The resolution also supports the 20-point Trump ceasefire plan and strengthens the fragile ceasefire momentum previously mediated by Washington and its allies.

This decision marks an important step in U.S. efforts to outline the future of Gaza after the Israel-Hamas war devastated much of the territory and resulted in tens of thousands of casualties.
