Great Bend Innovation Center Construction Pauses Due to Funding Shortfall
Construction on the Great Bend Innovation Center in central Kansas will temporarily halt as Great Bend Economic Development works to secure additional funding following unexpected federal program cuts and economic challenges.
The multi-million dollar project, intended to be a hub for entrepreneurship, workforce development, and innovation in Barton County, has faced setbacks after several anticipated grant sources failed to materialize due to policy changes earlier in 2025 and the recent government shutdown. This pause impacts a key project designed to revitalize the regional economy and attract new businesses.
“We’ve been diligent in scaling back and implementing cost-saving measures to stretch every dollar,” said Jason Kuilan, Executive Director of Great Bend Economic Development. “We modified building designs, reduced equipment investments in the innovation kitchen, and adjusted the fabrication lab’s initial investment requirements.” Despite these efforts, Kuilan explained that savings were insufficient to offset funding shortfalls caused by federal cuts, reduced private contributions, and increased construction costs due to tariffs. The organization remains financially stable and continues to operate at full capacity, with day-to-day operations supported by the City of Great Bend, while the Innovation Center relies entirely on external funding sources like the Economic Development Administration.
Kuilan emphasized that funding pipelines are already in progress, including proceeds from a real estate sale and an already-awarded grant. He stated, “We’re confident construction will resume once additional funding has been secured,” adding that the project represents “the very best of Great Bend’s spirit.” You can learn more about Great Bend Economic Development’s work on their website.
Officials anticipate construction will resume as soon as additional funding is secured, ensuring the project’s completion responsibly and sustainably.
