Insects and Reptiles on Mars? Scientist Claims Life Exists There

An emeritus professor from Ohio University has reignited debate about potential life on Mars after claiming to identify insect- and reptile-like forms in images taken by NASA rovers.

William Romoser presented his analysis at a meeting of the Entomological Society of America, arguing that certain shapes in publicly available Curiosity rover photos resemble terrestrial arthropods. He pointed to features such as segmented bodies, wings, jointed appendages, and what he described as compound eyes and specialized legs.

In one instance, Romoser said he observed a creature performing an acrobatic flight maneuver — diving steeply before leveling off — similar to insect behavior seen on Earth. He similarly suggested these organisms might be sheltering or nesting in caves, burrows beneath the Martian surface, or in specialized structures.

Yet, Romoser’s claims are based solely on visual interpretation of the images, with no physical samples or chemical traces to support the existence of biological activity. Many researchers remain unconvinced, attributing the perceived shapes to pareidolia — the psychological tendency to recognize familiar patterns in random visual data.

The story gained renewed attention in April 2026 after a Czech-language report from Nedd.cz highlighted Romoser’s analysis, bringing the controversial claims back into public discussion.
