Apple is preparing for what could be its most meaningful iPhone redesign in years with teh upcoming iPhone 18, according to newly leaked details. Reports indicate substantial upgrades are planned for the Pro models, including a nearly borderless display and the potential elimination of the Dynamic Island through an under-display Face ID system. The Cupertino giant is also reportedly exploring a foldable iPhone design and expanding its model lineup to six distinct options, signaling a major shift in the company’s smartphone strategy for a staggered release beginning Fall 2026.

Apple is reportedly planning a significant redesign for its upcoming iPhone 18, potentially marking its most ambitious overhaul in years. Early reports suggest the iPhone 18 Pro will feature substantial internal upgrades alongside a striking new external aesthetic, with a particular focus on advancements in photography and video capabilities.

Nearly Borderless Display and Hidden Face ID

According to leaks from Digital Chat Station, Apple is aiming for a 6.86-inch OLED LTPO display on the Pro Max model. However, the most revolutionary change could be the integration of the Face ID system *under* the display, effectively eliminating the Dynamic Island.

This move promises to improve the device’s aesthetics and deliver a more immersive experience for gaming and multimedia content. Estimates suggest a 5% increase in usable screen area.

Variable Aperture Camera and 8K Video

The primary camera is expected to feature a variable aperture, which would result in improved low-light photos, portraits with greater depth of field, and overall more professional image quality. The camera system will also include a 48 MP sensor with 5x optical zoom, an ultra-wide lens with advanced stabilization, and the ability to record video in 8K at 60 fps.

These hardware improvements will be complemented by Apple’s established computational photography expertise.

Increased Power and Enhanced Battery Life

The A20 Pro chip will power the iPhone 18. Built using 2-nanometer technology, the new chip is projected to deliver a 15% performance boost, with a particular emphasis on artificial intelligence tasks and energy efficiency.

Larger models will also incorporate a new cooling system and a battery with a stainless steel casing to maximize performance. A custom 5G modem, optimized for reduced power consumption, is also planned.

A Design Throwback

One of the most noticeable design changes will be on the rear of the device. Apple is reportedly incorporating a partially transparent zone that will reveal the wireless charging coil surrounding the MagSafe connector. This visual cue is reminiscent of the iMac G3 computers from the 1990s and is expected to become a new design signature.

Expanded Lineup and a Foldable iPhone on the Horizon

Apple plans to release six different models:

  • iPhone 18 standard
  • iPhone 18e (budget version)
  • iPhone Air (ultrathin)
  • iPhone 18 Pro
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max
  • And for the first time… an iPhone Fold, with a book-like design!

The rollout will be staggered, with the Pro, Air, and Fold models arriving in Fall 2026, and the standard models following in Spring 2027.
