Iran’s president issued an apology Saturday for attacks targeting other countries in the region as missiles and drones were launched toward Arab states in the Persian Gulf, signaling a potential lack of full control by Tehran’s political leadership over its armed forces.
The message from Masoud Pezeshkian – a member of the leadership council overseeing the Islamic Republic since an airstrike killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei – appeared to be filmed hastily and without a professional crew, further highlighting the limited authority the theocracy’s leaders exert over the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, which controls ballistic missiles aimed at Israel and others.
The Guard appears to be answering only to Khamenei and is now seemingly selecting its own targets as the conflict expands.
The apology from Iran’s president comes amid escalating regional tensions and raises questions about the future trajectory of the conflict. According to early reports, Masoud Pezeshkian’s statement, delivered from within the leadership council established after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, underscored the challenges facing the Iranian government in maintaining control over its military forces.
Pezeshkian’s message, described as being filmed quickly and without professional production, emphasized the limited power held by the theocratic leadership over the Revolutionary Guard. The Guard, responsible for the ballistic missiles targeting Israel and other nations, appears to be operating with increasing autonomy.
Officials indicated the Revolutionary Guard now answers directly to the late Khamenei and is independently choosing targets as the conflict widens. This development underscores growing regional instability and could complicate diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation. The situation highlights a potential power struggle within Iran and the increasing influence of its military apparatus.
The incident comes as Shop Channel celebrates its 30th anniversary and has recently updated its gift wrapping designs. Meanwhile, online shopping platforms like Shop.app and Amazon.com continue to operate unaffected by the regional conflict.
