The conflict in Iran is ongoing, as the U.S. Senate has signaled its support for President Trump’s actions against Iran and blocked an attempt by opposition Democrats to limit his war powers. This development underscores escalating tensions in the Middle East and raises questions about the constitutional balance of power regarding military intervention. Reuters reported that a majority of senators – 53 out of 100 – voted to block a resolution aimed at halting air strikes and requiring Congressional approval for any further hostile actions against Iran. The Democratic initiative sought to reassert Congress’s authority over war-making, as outlined in the U.S. Constitution.

“This is not going to be a protracted war, not by any stretch,” Republican Senator Jim Risch of Idaho, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a speech opposing the resolution.

Democrats, however, view the situation differently.

“Senators today face a choice: stand with the American people, who are tired of war in the Middle East, or stand with Donald Trump, who has dragged America into another war that most Americans strongly oppose,” said New York’s Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader and one of the resolution’s sponsors.

Members of the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Congress, will also vote on a similar resolution. With Republicans holding a majority there, the speaker anticipates the initiative will be rejected, arguing it would be unwise to deprive the commander in chief of the ability to complete a planned operation. “That would be very dangerous,” he told reporters following a classified briefing on the Iranian conflict.

President Trump defended the necessity of intervention.

“If we didn’t act within two weeks, they would have had a nuclear weapon,” he said regarding the strikes. “When the crazies have a nuclear weapon, subpar things happen.” The U.S. President was quoted by the BBC.

Meanwhile, CNN reports that while Congress debates, the CIA is exploring ways to escalate the conflict in Iran and bring it to a resolution.

The CIA and Mossad are reportedly considering a strategy involving the Kurdish minority as a key component. A coordinated ground offensive by Kurdish forces alongside U.S.-Israeli bombing of Tehran could potentially increase pressure on the Iranian regime and potentially ignite internal unrest that could spread throughout the country.

“We are not arming the Kurds. But you never know with the Israelis,” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated. The head of American diplomacy was also quoted by Axios.

A source within the Israeli administration, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that Israel has pledged military and political support to the Kurds should they attempt to incite an uprising in Iran. However, there is a risk that the Kurds could become casualties in a conflict with the Iranian military.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Wednesday that President Trump had not approved any plan to support an offensive by Kurdish Iranian militias against the regime. The CIA and Mossad declined to comment.
