Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, the Kremlin has issued a warning regarding potential U.S.military action against Iran, following a direct threat from President trump concerning its nuclear program. This comes as Russia and Iran have increasingly aligned themselves through a strategic partnership-formalized with a 20-year treaty in early 2025-even as both nations face international sanctions [[3]] and regional instability, including reported strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last year [[2]]. Moscow is urging a return to negotiations, raising concerns that a military response could destabilize the wider region.

Moscow has cautioned that any military action against Iran would carry dangerous consequences and potentially destabilize the entire Middle East, while also asserting that there remains room for negotiations between Tehran and Washington.

The Kremlin’s assessment comes after U.S. President Donald Trump warned Iran to engage in talks over its nuclear program or risk a potential U.S. attack on Wednesday, according to reports.

“We continue to urge all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from the use of force to resolve issues. Clearly, the potential for negotiations is far from exhausted… We should primarily focus on negotiation mechanisms,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists Thursday, February 29.

Peskov emphasized that “any coercive action can only generate chaos in the region and lead to very dangerous consequences in terms of destabilizing the security system throughout the region.”

Russia has strengthened ties with Iran since the start of the war in Ukraine, formalizing the relationship with a 20-year strategic partnership treaty in January 2025. The deepening relationship reflects a broader realignment of geopolitical forces as international tensions rise.
