Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated sharply following recent accusations and warnings exchanged between Tehran and Washington. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian issued a stark warning Monday that any attack on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would be considered an act of war, a response to former President Donald Trump’s public statements suggesting a desire for a change in Iranian leadership. These developments follow accusations from Ayatollah Khamenei that the U.S.and Israel played a role in the deaths of thousands during weeks of anti-government protests, adding further complexity to the already volatile situation in the Middle East.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned that any attack targeting the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, would be considered an act of war. The statement, issued Monday, January 19, 2026, came in response to remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting a desire for new leadership in Iran.

“An attack against the leader of our nation is the same as a full-scale war with the Iranian nation,” Pezeshkian said in a post on X, according to reports from AFP.

The warning follows Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s accusations that actors linked to the United States and Israel were responsible for the deaths of “several thousand” people during recent anti-government protests in Iran. The demonstrations, which lasted for several weeks, were marked by widespread unrest.

“Those affiliated with Israel and the U.S. caused significant damage and killed several thousand people during the protests that shook Iran for more than two weeks,” Khamenei said, as reported by Al-Jazeera on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

Khamenei directly accused both countries of involvement in the violence and labeled former U.S. President Donald Trump a “criminal.”

“The latest anti-Iran rebellion was different because the president of the U.S. was personally involved,” he stated.
