EDMONTON, Alberta – Anthony Duclair broke a scoreless tie late in the third period Friday night, giving the New York Islanders a rare 1-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers and ending a lengthy losing streak for the visitors at Rogers Place. The victory snapped the Islanders’ six-game skid in Edmonton, a venue where they hadn’t won since March 2017, and came despite a season-ending 20-game point streak for Oilers captain Connor McDavid. Both teams now quickly continue their respective road trips with weekend matchups against Pacific Division opponents.
Anthony Duclair’s third-period goal lifted the New York Islanders to a 1-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Friday, snapping a six-game losing streak for the Islanders in Edmonton.
The Islanders (26-16-5) have now won four of their last six games, continuing their push for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, the Oilers (23-17-8) suffered their third loss in the last four contests.
Edmonton’s Connor Ingram stopped 17 shots in the losing effort.
The game remained scoreless until the final minutes, when Calum Ritchie’s backhand pass found Duclair, who rifled a shot past Ingram for his ninth goal of the season with 6:18 left in regulation.
In a milestone night for the Islanders, Matthew Barzal recorded an assist, reaching 500 career points in his 576th game. The Islanders’ leading scorer has been heating up, with eight points in his last six appearances.
The Oilers faced a significant setback as Connor McDavid’s impressive point streak came to an end at 20 games. During the streak, McDavid tallied 19 goals and 27 assists, becoming only the third player in Oilers franchise history to achieve a 20-game point streak, joining Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey.
This win marked a rare victory for the Islanders in Edmonton, having lost their previous six visits dating back to March 7, 2017. Prior to Friday’s game, the Oilers boasted a dominant 12-1-0 record against New York at home since the 2007-08 season, outscoring them 41-23.
The Islanders continue their road trip, heading to Calgary to face the Flames on Saturday.
The Oilers will quickly travel to Vancouver to take on the Canucks, also on Saturday.
