A rare work of art has been damaged at Italy’s Ministry of Industry after a regional minister fell down a flight of stairs. Emanuele Cani, the Sardinian Minister of Industry, reportedly lost his footing and crashed through a historic stained-glass window on Tuesday.

According to witnesses, Cani stumbled on the upper steps of the staircase inside the Palazzo Piacentini and fell forward, impacting the glass panel. The force of the fall shattered the artwork, scattering fragments throughout the reception area.

Minister Not Seriously Injured in Fall

Following the incident, Cani was examined by medical personnel and, according to Italian media reports, did not sustain any serious injuries. The minister himself expressed regret over the damage, estimating the cost of repairs could reach approximately 40,000 euros.

Lost Artwork Held Significant Historical Value

The damaged vitrail was not merely a decorative element. It was “Carta del lavoro” (Charter of Work), a piece created in 1932 by prominent Futurist artist Mario Sironi. The work was commissioned when the building housed the Fascist Ministry of Corporations, and depicts figures representing various trades and professions – a common theme in Sironi’s work from that period.

Vitrail Recently Underwent Restoration

The stained-glass window was a protected artistic feature of the Palazzo Piacentini and underwent extensive restoration work in 2014. The restoration was undertaken due to the artwork’s fragility and age, making its destruction a particularly significant loss to Italy’s cultural heritage. The incident highlights the challenges of preserving historical artworks within active government buildings.
