Three people died Saturday in separate avalanche incidents while skiing off-piste in the Italian Alps, according to rescue services.

The tragedies occurred in the Trentino-Alto Adige and Lombardy regions, areas that will host events during the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. The incidents highlight the inherent dangers of backcountry skiing, even in well-maintained alpine areas.

Two avalanches struck the Dolomite mountain range near Cortina d’Ampezzo, where women’s ski competitions are currently underway, Reuters reported.

Rescuers recovered the body of a skier who was venturing off-trail with three others on Punta Roca, a 3,300-meter peak on the Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Dolomites.

Separately, two other skiers died after being caught in an avalanche in Albosaggia, a village in the Valtellina valley, approximately 65 kilometers east of Bormio, where all men’s ski competitions are being held.
