Italy and Ukraine to Strengthen Drone and Defense Cooperation

Italy and Ukraine are forging a deeper strategic military alliance, centered on the joint production of drones and the development of advanced air defense capabilities to counter Russian aggression.

During Zelensky’s visit to Italy, the two leaders focused on strengthening cooperation on drones and defense. As part of these promises of reinforced cooperation, Rome will produce drones in collaboration with Kyiv. This joint venture underscores a strategic shift toward localized production of critical warfare technology.

The defense partnership extends beyond unmanned aerial vehicles. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kyiv is negotiating with European partners to establish a common air defense system. Complementing these diplomatic efforts, Italy has reportedly provided a key component necessary for Ukraine to develop its own “Iron Dome” to intercept Russian missiles.

Moscow has responded to these developments with threats, warning that it may strike European factories involved in supplying drones to the Ukrainian government.

Parallel to military aid, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni continues to advocate for aggressive economic measures. Speaking in Verona on April 14, 2026, Meloni asserted that economic pressure on Russia remains “the most effective weapon to facilitate build peace.” She urged caution and persistence in this strategy, particularly as the EU considers banning Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports—proposed for short-term contracts starting April 25, 2026, and long-term contracts beginning January 1, 2027.

Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s unwavering support for Ukraine, although noting that it is currently too early to consider returning to Russian gas supplies, despite energy price hikes and supply reductions triggered by the war in Iran.

The intensification of this bilateral defense relationship and the focus on economic attrition signal a long-term commitment by Italy to ensure Ukraine’s defensive resilience, potentially altering the logistical landscape of the conflict.
