Italy Increases Air Defense to Maximum Level

Italy, Spain, France, and the Netherlands are deploying naval forces to Cyprus, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto announced on Thursday, March 5, 2026. The move aims to bolster security in the region amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. European nations are taking action to protect the island and ensure the safety of maritime routes and civilian populations.

The decision follows a series of attacks in the area, including a drone strike on a British military base in Cyprus, which has further heightened concerns about the potential for wider conflict. The deployment of these naval assets signals a unified European response to the growing instability.

Crosetto also announced that Italy has raised its air defense level to the maximum. “together with Spain, France and the Netherlands, we will send naval assets to protect Cyprus in the next few days,” he told Italian lawmakers. He emphasized that the situation is extremely tense and anything could happen given the escalation of conflict in the Middle East.
