Jakarta authorities are beginning a long-planned effort to dismantle remnants of a stalled monorail project along the bustling Jalan HR Rasuna Said. The removal of the abandoned pillars is slated to occur during overnight hours to minimize disruption to one of the city’s major thoroughfares. Work commenced Wednesday night and will continue nightly, with officials prioritizing keeping traffic flowing throughout the process. The project is part of a larger initiative to improve infrastructure in the Rasuna Said area, with completion targeted for September 2026.

The Jakarta provincial government will begin dismantling abandoned monorail pillars along Jalan HR Rasuna Said late Wednesday night, aiming to minimize disruption to traffic flow in the busy thoroughfare. Work is scheduled to take place between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. local time.

According to Jakarta’s Head of Transportation, Syafrin Liputo, the timing was chosen due to consistently high traffic volume well into the evening.

“Because traffic congestion in Jakarta lasts even until 10 p.m., we’ve established a work window from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.,” Liputo said at the site of the planned dismantling Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

The dismantling will proceed one pillar at a time each night. Officials say there will be no full road closures, only the gradual closure of the slow lanes in the work areas.

“There will be no road closures. Only the slow lanes will be closed in stages. Traffic from the fast lanes will still be able to merge into the slow lanes,” Liputo explained.

To help maintain traffic flow, the Jakarta Transportation Department, along with the Public Order Agency, will deploy personnel each night during the work. Approximately 30 officers will be on duty to manage traffic and provide security at the location.

Liputo also urged drivers to avoid stopping or slowing down in the work zone, stating that curiosity-driven delays could create congestion.

“We hope drivers will keep moving and not stop at the work site so that traffic behind them continues to flow smoothly,” he said.

The Jakarta provincial government aims to complete the removal of all monorail pillars on Rasuna Said by September 2026, coinciding with planned improvements to the road, sidewalks, and drainage in the area.
