Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen experienced a disappointing end too her SEA Games 2025 singles campaign, being forced to retire from her semifinal match due to a respiratory issue.The unexpected withdrawal halts Tjen’s pursuit of a gold medal in women’s singles, despite a strong showing throughout the tournament.While this setback is a blow to her individual aspirations, Tjen recently contributed to a gold medal win for Indonesia in the women’s team event, adding to the nation’s growing medal count at the Games. As of today, Indonesia currently ranks second in the overall medal standings.

Indonesia’s Janice Tjen was forced to retire from her semifinal match at the SEA Games 2025 due to a respiratory issue, ending her bid for a singles title. The unfortunate development came during her contest against Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew, preventing her from reaching the final.

Tjen faced off against the host nation’s Sawangkaew on Tuesday, December 16th.

The match began as a tightly contested affair, but Tjen ultimately had to withdraw while trailing 6-4 in the first set. The breathing difficulties hampered her movement on the court, leading to the difficult decision to retire and avoid a potential more serious injury.

Sawangkaew will now advance to the final of the women’s singles tennis competition at the SEA Games 2025.

Despite the setback, Janice Tjen has already contributed to Indonesia’s medal count at the Games.



Earlier in the tournament, she played a key role in securing a gold medal for Indonesia in the women’s team tennis event on Saturday, December 13th.

Tjen was impressive in that competition, winning a crucial point in both the women’s singles and the women’s doubles alongside Aldila Sutjiadi.

Indonesia remains in contention for additional medals, currently sitting second in the SEA Games 2025 medal standings with a total of 56 gold medals.

On Monday morning, the nation added four more gold medals to its tally, with two coming from triathlon and two from rowing.
