A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the coast of western Japan earlier today, January 6th, causing notable shaking in Tottori and Shimane prefectures. The quake, which registered a 5-strong intensity in several locations, prompted transportation disruptions and a widespread assessment of potential damage. Authorities are currently urging caution as aftershocks-perhaps reaching a magnitude of 5-strong-are expected in the coming week, particularly given recent seismic activity including the devastating New Year’s Day earthquakes in the Noto Peninsula.

Strong Earthquake Shakes Western Japan, Triggering Aftermath Concerns

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 struck off the coast of western Japan on January 6, causing significant shaking in the prefectures of Tottori and Shimane. The quake, centered near the Sea of Japan, registered a magnitude of 5-strong in both Tottori and Shimane prefectures, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Strong tremors were also felt in Osaka and Hyogo prefectures, prompting a widespread assessment of potential damage. The earthquake occurred around 10:18 a.m. local time, and while there were initial reports of disruption to transportation, particularly at Yonago Airport, authorities have stated there have been no reports of major damage so far.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is urging residents to remain vigilant, warning of the possibility of further tremors reaching a magnitude of 5-strong over the next week. This caution comes as the region experienced a long-period ground motion reaching the maximum “Level 4” – a level not seen in two years, since the devastating earthquakes that impacted the Noto Peninsula. At this level, walking becomes difficult.

According to early reports, there is no tsunami threat associated with the earthquake. The quake underscores the seismic activity common to the Japanese archipelago and the ongoing need for preparedness.

A press conference held by the Japan Meteorological Agency emphasized the need for continued caution, advising residents to be prepared for potential aftershocks.

Weather News confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude and the lack of a tsunami warning.

The Sankei Shimbun reported on the significant long-period ground motion, highlighting the challenges it poses to mobility.

Details on the intensity of the quake across various locations are available from the Fukui Newspaper.
