Spanish authorities have dropped an investigation into allegations of sexual assault against music icon Julio Iglesias, citing a lack of jurisdiction. However, the decision doesn’t preclude potential legal action in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas, where the alleged incidents occurred.
The case stemmed from a three-year investigation by Spanish news outlet elDiario and Univision Noticias, which interviewed fifteen former employees who worked for Iglesias from the 1990s through 2023. Ten days ago, two women, identified in court documents as Rebeca and Laura, publicly accused the 80-year-old singer of “inappropriate touching, insults, and humiliation.”
Rebeca alleged that Iglesias, then 77, repeatedly summoned her to his room at the end of her workday and subjected her to unwanted sexual contact, including digital penetration. She also claimed another employee, a supervisor, was present during some of the alleged assaults. “He used me almost every night. I felt like an object, like a slave,” Rebeca told Spanish media.
Laura stated that Iglesias kissed and groped her without her consent. The Guardian reports that elDiario also revealed allegations that Iglesias required some female employees to undergo sexually transmitted disease testing.
Iglesias has vehemently denied the accusations and vowed to defend himself against them. While Spanish prosecutors have closed their investigation, citing jurisdictional limitations, they confirmed that Rebeca and Laura can still pursue criminal charges against Iglesias in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.
The allegations against Iglesias, a global superstar with a career spanning decades, have sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry. This case underscores the growing scrutiny of power dynamics and alleged misconduct within the music world.
