NewJeans Loses Legal Battle to Leave Record Label Ador

A South Korean court ruled today that K-pop group NewJeans’ contract with Ador remains valid, rejecting their attempt to unilaterally leave the agency despite allegations of mistreatment.

The five members – Hanni, Hyein, Haerin, Danielle, and Minji – announced their intention to depart Ador last year, citing concerns over agency practices. The Seoul Central District Court dismissed their argument that the dismissal of former Ador CEO Min Hee-jin, who also served as the group’s mentor, constituted a breach of contract. NewJeans had alleged that Min’s removal damaged their trust in the agency. This case highlights the significant power dynamics within the K-pop industry, where artists often face considerable challenges in asserting independence.

Following yesterday’s ruling, Ador released a statement expressing hope that the decision “will serve as an opportunity for the artists to calmly reflect on this matter” and affirmed its readiness for upcoming activities, including a planned album release. NewJeans has indicated its intention to appeal the court’s decision, with reports suggesting the group believes it is “impossible to return to Ador” and continue their work as normal. The dispute stems from a year-long standoff that began in April 2024 when Hybe, Ador’s parent company and home to groups like BTS, launched audits into Ador and called for Min Hee-jin to step down.

The group attempted to rebrand as NJZ and release new music earlier this year, but a court order halted promotions. Ador filed a lawsuit in December seeking to confirm the validity of its contract with NewJeans. Hanni, one of the group’s members, previously alleged workplace harassment during her time with the label. Ador stated it is now “waiting” for the members and their next steps, while NewJeans prepares for its appeal.
