“I’ve never been in a situation where I have to choose a film from a lot of stories,” says Kani Kusruti, reflecting on her approach to selecting roles.
Kani Kusruti has quickly garnered attention for her compelling performances. She made her cinematic debut in Lenin Rajendran’s Anyar, and later received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress for her role in Biriyani.
Her performance in Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagined as Light also drew praise, with the film being selected for the Grand Prix section at the Cannes Film Festival.
The actress shared her thoughts on the characters she chooses during a recent interview with Media One, in connection with the promotion of her new film, Assi.
“I haven’t had a situation where I have to choose a movie from a lot of stories until now. I’m not extremely choosy, and I like to play all kinds of characters. Not just me, but every artist likes to play different types of characters and do commercial films as well.”
“I haven’t seen an actor who says that they only do films that are in a certain genre, or belong to a particular category,” Kusruti continued. “The most thrilling thing about acting, for me, is that I can imagine whatever I want, sitting right where I am. And then I can live in that world,” she says.
The actress added that whereas no one is physically present in front of the screen, and actors only require to glance at the camera and deliver dialogue, in theatre, some of the things you say might not actually happen on stage, but you experience them through imagination.
Assi, directed by Anubhav Sinha and starring Taapsee Pannu in the lead role, is set to release on February 20th. Kani Kusruti and Revathy also feature in prominent roles in the film.
