Kharkiv Residents Face Prolonged Power Outages; Mayor Appeals for Assistance

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov publicly appealed to the leadership of Ukrenergo and Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal regarding extended power outages in the city.

The mayor noted that power cuts have become a harsh reality across the country, but emphasized that some cities are experiencing more severe disruptions. Kharkiv is among them.

Terekhov reminded that following the February 3rd attacks, approximately 900 homes in Kharkiv were left without heating. He said a promise was made to restore power to those homes within four hours, and that promise must be kept. “Power outages lasting 15-19 hours a day are unacceptable for Kharkiv,” he stated.

He explained that the outages pose a risk to water and heating systems due to the consequences of the attacks on infrastructure. Terekhov is requesting a review of the scheduling and principles of power cuts for Kharkiv, a maximum reduction in outage times, and a public explanation of the decision-making process.

The situation underscores the strain on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure amid ongoing conflict.

Man Faces Three-Year Sentence for Refusing Military Service

A resident of Uyutne (formerly Mariyne) in the Bohodukhiv district received a three-year prison sentence for evading mobilization, according to the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office. The man passed a medical examination in January 2024 and was deemed fit for service, agreeing with the commission’s decision.

“After that, he received a summons to the Bohodukhiv RTC and SP, but he did not appear at the military unit at the appointed time. Subsequently, the man refused to serve in the military in writing,” prosecutors stated.

The case was sent to court in January, but the defendant ignored hearings and went into hiding. He was later apprehended and remained in custody. He was found guilty of evading conscription during mobilization (Art. 336 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
