Search Continues After January 2 Kharkiv Strike
The search operation continues following a Russian strike on Kharkiv on January 2, according to Oleg Synegubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration. “Two people have been identified by remains, including a 3-year-old boy. Four more victims have been identified through DNA analysis,” Synegubov said in a national telethon broadcast. “Units of the State Emergency Service are still working to eliminate the consequences. The search operation is complicated by the fact that we are in the epicenter of the explosion and must clear all the rubble to potentially identify any remaining remains.”
The strike damaged approximately 20 apartment buildings, and while utilities have been restored, several buildings require further expert assessment to determine their structural integrity. Domestic Dispute Turns Violent in Kharkiv Region
Police report that a disagreement between cohabitating partners in Olkhivka, Kharkiv district, escalated into a stabbing. According to authorities, a 57-year-old woman allegedly stabbed her 68-year-old partner during an argument. The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries.
“The suspect was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Investigators have informed the woman of suspicion of committing a criminal offense under Part 1 of Article 121 (intentional serious bodily harm) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine,” police stated. Russian Forces Target Kharkiv Region with Missiles, Drones
Over the past 24 hours, Russian forces shelled Kharkiv and seven settlements in the region, according to Oleg Synegubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration. “A 67-year-old woman was injured in the shelling of Kupiansk-Uzlovyi settlement in the Kupiansk community,” Synegubov reported.
Russian forces also attacked the Khladnohirskyi district of Kharkiv with drones the previous day. The following weapons were reportedly used in the attacks:
- Two missiles (type is still being determined);
- Four Shahed-type drones;
- Three Molniya-type drones;
- One FPV drone;
- Eight drones (type is still being determined).
The shelling damaged a car and a cultural institution in the Kupiansk district, as well as two non-residential buildings. In the Kharkiv district, a gas station and warehouses were hit, and two private homes were damaged in the Lozovskyi district.

Russian Offensive Activity in Kharkiv Region – Morning Update
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported 11 combat engagements in the Kharkiv region over the past 24 hours. The latest information was released this morning, January 5.
On the northern front, Russian troops attempted to break through eight times near Volchansk, Starytsia, Prylypky, Izbytske, and Kutkivka. On the Kupiansk front, Ukrainian defenders repelled three Russian assaults near Stepova Novosilivka, Pervomaiskyi, and Petropavlivka.
“In total, 229 combat engagements were recorded over the past 24 hours. Yesterday, the enemy launched 62 air strikes, dropped 185 guided aerial bombs, and used one missile. In addition, they carried out 4,016 shellings, including 84 from multiple launch rocket systems, and employed 5,232 kamikaze drones,” the General Staff reported.

Air Raid Sirens Sound in Kharkiv Region Overnight
An air raid alert was issued in Kharkiv at 2:16 a.m. local time. Ukraine’s Air Force reported that a MiG-31 fighter jet took off. The Air Force provided the update on Telegram.
A fast-moving target was detected in the Kharkiv region at 3:42 a.m., heading northwest. At 4:29 a.m., there was a threat of guided bomb attacks on the region.
The all-clear was given in Kharkiv and the surrounding region at 5:44 a.m. As of 7:20 a.m., the situation in the regional center remains calm.
