Mercedes Formula 1 driver Kimi Antonelli was involved in a car accident near his home in San Marino on Saturday, but escaped without injury, the team confirmed on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old Italian’s vehicle sustained damage in the incident, which occurred in Serravalle, San Marino, but Antonelli was unharmed. No other vehicles were involved, according to a team spokesperson’s statement.

“We can confirm that Kimi was involved in a traffic accident on Saturday night close to his home in San Marino,” the statement read. “The police attended the scene, after being called by Kimi. His was the only car involved and while his vehicle was damaged, Kimi was completely unhurt.”

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reported that authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, which involved Antonelli’s Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Pro 4Matic+ Motorsport Collectors Edition supercar.

Antonelli, who recently obtained his driver’s license in January 2025, is scheduled to participate in the second test of the Formula 1 preseason this week in Bahrain. He is expected to share driving duties with teammate George Russell over the three-day event.

The young driver made a significant jump to Formula 1 in 2025, replacing seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton as Russell’s teammate. He finished seventh in the 2025 standings, a promising debut for the rising star. More details on the incident are emerging as the investigation continues.

This incident comes as Antonelli prepares for a crucial season, with expectations high following his impressive performance in his rookie year. The team has assured fans that the crash will not affect his participation in the upcoming Bahrain test.
