The Los Angeles Kings suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, falling 2-1 in overtime to the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday evening at Honda Center. The Kings are now facing a challenging stretch as they attempt to stay competitive in the Western Conference playoff race.
Anaheim struck first just over six minutes into the contest. Ducks forward Mason McTavish lit the lamp for his 12th goal of the season, capitalizing on a rush led by defenseman Owen Zellweger. Zellweger’s pass found McTavish with space, and he fired a shot past Kings goaltender Anton Forsberg to give the Ducks an early 1-0 lead.
The Kings battled back in the second period, taking advantage of a rare 5-on-3 power play opportunity. After Anaheim was assessed two penalties within six seconds of each other, Kevin Fiala set up Adrian Kempe for a one-timer. Kempe buried his 16th goal of the season, tying the game at one.
Despite the Kings’ efforts to force a tie, Anaheim completed a weekend sweep with a dramatic overtime winner. With under a minute remaining in the extra frame, Beckett Sennecke chased down Fiala, initiating a 2-on-1 rush the other way. Mikael Granlund then kept the puck and snapped a shot under the crossbar for the 2-1 victory.
