Seoul, South Korea – A South Korean lawmaker and a former city council member were arrested Tuesday, March 3, 2026, on charges related to an alleged bribery scheme involving a substantial campaign contribution. The arrests mark the second instance of a current lawmaker being taken into custody during the current parliamentary term, raising concerns about political corruption.

Kang Seon-woo, an independent member of the National Assembly and Kim Kyung, a former Seoul City Councilor, are accused of exchanging 100 million won (approximately $77,000 USD) in connection with the 2022 local elections, according to reports from Yonhap News Agency and The Korea Herald. Kang allegedly received the funds in exchange for influencing the selection of candidates within the Democratic Party.

Authorities acted after the release of audio recordings that fueled the bribery allegations, which had been circulating for 64 days prior to the arrests. The Seoul Central District Court issued arrest warrants, citing concerns that the pair might attempt to destroy evidence. “There is a concern that evidence could be destroyed,” the court stated, as reported by sedaily.com.

Kang Seon-woo had previously been considered for a ministerial position in the current administration but was removed from consideration due to allegations of mistreatment of his aides. This latest development represents a significant setback for the politician, who now faces legal repercussions. The case highlights the ongoing scrutiny of campaign finance practices within South Korean politics.

Kim Kyung is accused of delivering the alleged bribe. Police are continuing to investigate related allegations of “segmented donations” and further lobbying efforts within political circles, News1 reported.

Both individuals underwent questioning at the Seoul Central District Court on Monday, March 3, 2026. Kang expressed regret for the situation, stating, “I apologize to the people for causing concern with this matter. I will cooperate fully with the investigation,” according to The Korea Herald. Kim Kyung did not make a statement.

The arrests follow that of Kwon Seong-dong, a member of the People Power Party, who was previously arrested, making Kang the second current member of the National Assembly to be arrested. The investigation was initially met with criticism for its perceived slow pace, but law enforcement officials expressed relief at the developments, Yonhap News Agency noted.
