March 20, 2026 – In a remarkable display of perseverance and community spirit, the agricultural high school of Kochi Prefecture is making its first-ever appearance at the National High School Baseball Championship, known as the Spring Koshien tournament. The team secured its spot through the 21st-century wildcard selection process, and will face a significant challenge in their opening match against Nihon Buri High School from Niigata Prefecture.
The journey to Koshien for the 18-member team hasn’t been without hurdles. Balancing rigorous agricultural studies with baseball practice has limited the time available for dedicated training. Despite these constraints, the team demonstrated considerable potential in the 2025 Kochi Prefecture Autumn Tournament, pushing a strong opponent, Meitoku Gijuku, to a 10-inning tiebreaker before ultimately falling short.
The achievement is particularly poignant for graduating third-year students like Takuya Komatsu, who expressed both pride and a touch of wistfulness. “I’m a little envious, but I really want this generation to do their best and give it everything they’ve got at Koshien,” Komatsu said, passing the torch to his younger teammates.
Current team members are focused on the task ahead. Pitcher Shinba Sawada shared his anticipation, stating, “I was so excited about Koshien that I had trouble concentrating on my studies, but I’m looking forward to seeing how much I’ve improved over the winter and how well I can compete at the national level.”
Recognizing a require to improve their offensive capabilities during the off-season, the team focused on strength training and simulated game scenarios. Practices incorporated crowd noise and simulated announcements to prepare players for the atmosphere of the Koshien stadium. This preparation is crucial, as the team aims to overcome a historical challenge: limited scoring opportunities.
The team’s strength lies in the strong bonds between its players. Captain Jin Sugimoto emphasized the importance of team cohesion, highlighting the leadership of ace pitcher Aoi Yamashita. This sense of unity has been instrumental in overcoming obstacles and achieving this milestone.
The selection of Kochi Agricultural High School for the 21st-century wildcard is the third time a school from Kochi Prefecture has received this honor, following selections in 2013, and 2017. The team’s first-round match against Nihon Buri is scheduled for March 21st, and will be closely followed by fans in both regions. This event underscores the ongoing importance of high school baseball as a cultural touchstone in Japan, and the power of sports to inspire and unite communities.
