Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, who later served as president of Harvard University in the early 2000s, has stepped down from his teaching role at the institution following the publication of his email correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein.
A Harvard spokesperson, Jason Newton, stated that the university’s dean accepted Summers’ resignation “in the context of the ongoing review by the University of documents relating to Jeffrey Epstein that were recently made public by the government.”
Summers had previously announced in November that he would be withdrawing from public life while continuing in his teaching position.
The prominent economist, who as well served under the Obama administration as director of the National Economic Council, appears frequently in materials related to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who was found dead in his jail cell in 2019.
Among the judicial documents released by the government, Summers is listed in Epstein’s address book and schedules and was involved in exchanges concerning academic and philanthropic matters, particularly during his time as Harvard’s president.
Epstein made numerous donations to the university, totaling $9.1 million between 1998 and 2008, according to Harvard records.
Hillary Clinton to testify Thursday
The mere mention of an individual in the Epstein case does not necessarily imply wrongdoing. Though, the released documents reveal connections between the convicted sex offender, or those around him, and prominent figures who had often downplayed or denied such associations.
The resignation comes on the eve of a scheduled hearing before a House committee with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton regarding the Epstein matter. Her husband, Bill Clinton, who maintained a long-standing friendship with the financier, is scheduled to testify before the committee the following day.

The developments surrounding Summers and the Clintons underscore the widening scope of scrutiny related to Epstein’s network and its connections to influential figures. The upcoming congressional testimony is expected to shed further light on the extent of these relationships and their potential implications.
