Latvia’s men’s handball team is preparing for two pre-qualification matches for the European Championship against Great Britain, beginning a three-day training camp in the new year. Head coach Margots Valkovskis shared updates with Latvian Television.

Valkovskis has a squad of 19 players available, including key player Dainis Kristopans. However, Kristopans will only participate in the home game on Sunday in Jelgava.

“[We] checked everyone together. It’s very good that Dainis is also involved in the training process. Everything isn’t quite how I want it 100% yet, but we’re getting close. We’re doing everything we could in these three days,”

the coach commented on the team’s preparation.

This marks the second training camp for the Latvian national team under Valkovskis’ leadership. In November, Latvia secured two victories against Luxembourg in pre-qualification for the World Championship. Captain Jānis Pāvels Valkovskis will miss the upcoming matches following recent meniscus surgery. Jevgenijs Rogonovs will captain the side for the first time.

“I feel honored, I’m happy myself, and I want to give everything both on and off the court. Our team has a fairly fast [playing] style that suits us. We have a lot of players who are physically ready to run, and a lot of substitutions – that’s one of our biggest strengths,” said Rogonovs, the team’s captain for this training camp.

The Latvian national team will travel to England on Tuesday, where they will play their first pre-qualification match in Nottingham the following day. Latvia will then host England in Jelgava on Sunday, with the match broadcast live on LTV7 and the LSM.lv portal. Wednesday’s game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM Latvian time, while the Sunday match will start at 3:10 PM.
