IMATRA, Finland – Latvia’s rising biathlon stars are competing this week at the European Junior Championships in Imatra, Finland, a key development event for the sport’s next generation.The competition, which began today and continues through Sunday, features athletes vying for top placements in both sprint and pursuit races. While a Latvian competitor came within reach of a medal today, results were varied across the team as athletes navigated challenging shooting stages.
Latvia’s biathletes faced a mixed day of competition at the European Junior Championships in Imatra, Finland, with one athlete narrowly missing the podium.
The Latvian competitor finished second, just five seconds behind the winner. Both the gold and silver medalists encountered only one penalty throughout the shooting stages.
Elza Bleidele was the next best Latvian finisher, placing 17th with a time that was 1 minute and 39.3 seconds slower than the leader. She struggled with her accuracy, missing two targets in the prone position and one in the standing stage.
Martine Djatkovica finished 49th, 3 minutes and 32.8 seconds off the pace, after incurring two shooting penalties. Laura Alzina completed the course in 63rd place (+4:20.3) among a field of 90 athletes, hampered by two misses in the standing shoot.
The European Junior Championships in Imatra will continue through Sunday, offering further opportunities for young biathletes to showcase their talent on the international stage. This event serves as a crucial stepping stone for aspiring athletes hoping to compete at the highest levels of the sport.
