Riga, Latvia is gearing up for its second annual GAMMA Awards, recognizing the best in contemporary Latvian music. Nominations were announced on Thursday, February 19th, across more than 20 categories, honoring both artists and industry professionals who have shaped the country’s musical landscape over the past year.
What is the GAMMA Award?
GAMMA, which stands for Gada augstākais mūsdienu mūzikas apbalvojums (Year’s Highest Contemporary Music Award), represents a latest approach to celebrating excellence in the Latvian music industry. The award aims to represent the industry throughout the year, and was initiated by artists and members of LaIPA (Latvian Performers’ and Producers’ Association) in the spring of 2024. According to organizers, GAMMA combines official data with professional evaluations to highlight the most significant achievements in the Latvian music scene.
The Ceremony and Performers
The second GAMMA Awards ceremony and star-studded concert will take place on March 5th, 2026, at the “Xiaomi Arena” in Riga. The event is open to the public, offering attendees the chance to witness both the awards presentation and a special concert featuring some of Latvia’s most recognizable artists. The concert program will include performances by Prāta Vētra, Dons, Bermudu Divstūris, Apvedceļš, Sudden Lights, Tautumeitas, Medību Lauki, Kautkaili, and Deniss. Organizers promise additional artists and surprises will be revealed during the ceremony itself, adding to the excitement of the event. The concert program is designed to showcase the brightest performances of the past season and the work of currently popular artists.
Who’s Nominated?
The GAMMA Awards jury comprises over 150 members, including musicians, industry professionals, and music enthusiasts. They evaluate each artist’s work from December 1st, 2024, to December 31st, 2025, based on carefully developed qualitative criteria. As the award organizers note, nominations are based on a combination of data and jury evaluation. One component covers the artist’s overall activity during the year, while the other assesses a specific aspect of their work, such as creative merit. According to the GAMMA regulations, awards are presented annually in both Major and Industry categories. Among those vying for the title of Solo Artist of the Year are Dons, Fiņķis, Intars Busulis, Ozols, and Wiesulis, while Antra Stafecka, Atvara, Aminata, Emilija, and Patrisha are nominated for Solo Artist of the Year among female artists. Carnival Youth, Tautumeitas, Kautkaili, Sudden Lights, and Prāta Vētra are competing for Group or Collective of the Year.
