Lausanne-Sport is poised to take a bold step, potentially revolutionizing fan access to matches. The Swiss Super League club is set to introduce a flexible subscription model inspired by popular streaming services like Netflix.

Starting December 1st, new season ticket holders will have the option to pay monthly, rather than committing to a large annual fee. More significantly, beginning next season, fans will be able to purchase subscriptions at any point, without being locked into a fixed duration. “To foster commitment, we need flexibility in both subscribing and unsubscribing,” explained Vice President Vincent Steinmann.

The primary goal for Lausanne-Sport is to consistently draw larger crowds to the Tuilière stadium. “Filling the stadium is a necessity,” Steinmann emphasized. Currently, the club’s season ticket base falls just shy of 3,000, though average attendance this season has been close to 7,000, a figure that doesn’t include the higher turnout for Conference League matches.

Timing is Right for a Risk

“We aim to transform this engagement into something lasting,” Steinmann stated, adding that the club intends to capitalize on a strong run of form, particularly in European competition. Recent results provide a foundation for fan loyalty, and the club is looking for the right way to build on that momentum.

Drawing inspiration from clubs like Copenhagen and Anderlecht, which have implemented similar approaches, Lausanne-Sport is taking a leap into uncharted territory within Swiss soccer. This model has yet to be adopted by any sports organization in Switzerland.

The timing presents a unique challenge, as the relatively short summer break in the Super League coincides with a period when many fans are on vacation, making subscription sales more difficult. Navigating this timing will be key to the plan’s success.

This new approach is designed to align with modern leisure and entertainment habits, recognizing soccer’s place within that landscape, particularly in Lausanne.
