Lee Towers Celebrates 80th Birthday with Rotterdam Tribute
Rotterdam’s beloved singer, Lee Towers, is turning 80 on March 23rd and even as he’s opting for a private celebration with family, a special tribute is planned for March 26th at the Oude Luxor Theater. The event will feature a performance by the popular band De Wannebiezz as part of the Meezingfeest Rotterdam.
Towers, affectionately known as “Mr. Ahoy” for his 51 performances at the Rotterdam Ahoy, chose to forgo a large-scale gala event, finding the organization and logistics less appealing these days. He first gained prominence in the 1980s with his elaborate “Gala’s of the Year,” setting the stage for future performers like René Froger, Frans Bauer, and Paul de Leeuw to also grace the Ahoy stage.
Despite initially declining a large public celebration, Towers will be honored with the tribute concert, ensuring the city still has a chance to recognize its musical ambassador. The performance offers a more intimate setting to celebrate his legacy.
In addition to the upcoming tribute, Lee Towers also has his own wine, according to NPO Radio 5.
The singer’s impact on Dutch entertainment is significant, and this milestone birthday is being marked with both personal reflection and public acknowledgment. De Telegraaf reports that Shownieuws is also planning a special tribute to mark the occasion.
