LHC suffered a decisive 5-0 defeat to Malmö tuesday, marking their second consecutive loss adn raising questions about the team’s performance heading into a critical stretch of the season. The loss came as the team travels to face league-leading Frölunda-currently 27-4-0-at Saab Arena next tuesday. Despite the lopsided score, LHC’s coach maintains the game was not indicative of the team’s capabilities and emphasized the need for structural adjustments and improved goaltender support.
A five-goal defeat leaves LHC searching for answers as they prepare for a tough matchup against league leaders Frölunda. Malmö dominated Tuesday’s contest, capitalizing on key penalties to secure a 5–0 victory.
The game started slowly, but the first period saw a shift in momentum for LHC in the final ten minutes. However, two costly penalties proved decisive, with Malmö finding the back of the net just before the buzzer. The second period began with similar struggles, despite LHC creating several opportunities to equalize. Malmö quickly extended their lead, scoring twice in quick succession to make it 2–0, then adding a third and fourth goal shortly after. By the time the fifth goal went in, the outcome was all but decided.
“I don’t think this was a 5–0 game, not at all,” the coach stated after the match. “We need to provide better support for our goaltenders and make things easier for them. We’ve changed goaltenders in the last two games, but that’s not a reflection on them – we lost our structure and need to show a lot more patience.”
Despite the heavy defeat, the coach pointed to some positive aspects of the team’s performance. “It feels strange to talk about doing good things when you lose 5–0, but we can’t dwell on it. We need to move forward. We had some good transitions, sustained offensive pressure, and our defensemen were more involved in the attack. We just need to find ways to score more goals.”
LHC will look to rebound quickly when they host league-leading Frölunda on Tuesday at Saab Arena. The coach acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying, “It will be a fun game. We’ve played two good games against them previously, but haven’t been able to get the result. Frölunda has two excellent goaltenders, they’re strong with the puck, and they’re by far the best team in the league at doing the little things well. We need to match that on Tuesday.”
Frölunda has been dominant this season, with only four losses in 31 games and a league-best 47 goals conceded. However, the coach believes every team has weaknesses. “Växjö played a really good game against them recently and showed that they can be hurt. Their goaltending has won them a lot of games, but they still give up some chances.”
With a busy week ahead featuring three games, the coach emphasized the importance of a quick response. “It’s good to have a packed schedule – it keeps everyone involved. You need to win, and after a performance like the one against Malmö, it’s crucial to break that trend immediately and get back on track.”
The coach also noted a growing intensity surrounding the games as the season progresses. “Yes, absolutely. It’s great that we’re getting to the business end of the season. As a coach, of course, I’m disappointed when we don’t compete like we have been recently. We just need to get back to hard work right away.”
