Liepaja Complex Sports School is making a name for itself on the international stage, and recently returned from a triumphant showing at the prestigious Sobieski Cup in Poland. The annual greco-Roman wrestling tournament, held January 26-28 in Poznań, attracts young athletes from across Europe, serving as a proving ground for future champions. Liepaja’s team of under-17 wrestlers secured a notable third-place finish among 26 competing teams, demonstrating the rising strength of Latvian wrestling programs.
Liepaja Complex Sports School wrestlers secured a strong showing at the 34th annual Sobieski Cup in Poznań, Poland, in January, finishing third overall in a competitive field of 26 teams.
The international Greco-Roman wrestling tournament, held for athletes under 17, drew competitors from six nations. Liepaja Complex Sports School sent a contingent that delivered several medal-winning performances.
Račislavs Andruškēvičs led the way, claiming the championship in the 45kg weight class. Kristers Freimanis (51kg), Jānis Ruicis (71kg), and Aleks Kļava (80kg) each earned bronze medals for their efforts.
“Par čempionu savā svara kategorijā kļuva Račislavs Andruškēvičs (45kg), trešo vietu izcīnīja Kristers Freimanis (51kg), Jānis Ruicis (71kg) un Aleks Kļava (80kg),” said coach Arturs Jaunsleinis, praising the team’s accomplishments.
The third-place finish in the team standings highlights the growing strength of wrestling programs at Liepaja Complex Sports School. The Sobieski Cup is a key event for developing young talent in the sport, providing valuable international competition experience.
