A newly elected senator in Argentina is facing a temporary limbo as she prepares to take office amid scrutiny over a past legal issue in the United States. Lorena Villaverde, recently elected to the Senate on October 26, is currently a national deputy for Río Negro and is expected to resign from that post this week.
The opposition has raised questions about Villaverde’s past, seeking to prevent her from assuming her Senate seat. According to sources within La Libertad Avanza, Villaverde will submit her resignation as a deputy on Wednesday morning, ahead of a preparatory session. This move is intended to allow the ruling bloc to address the accusations leveled by the Peronist opposition.
“Yes, she is resigning along with others,” sources within La Libertad Avanza confirmed. There had been speculation that Villaverde might remain in the Chamber of Deputies until a resolution regarding her eligibility was reached, but orders have been given for her to formally resign by 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

This temporary vacancy will last until the Senate decides on her future, a process not expected to occur until after December 10, when the newly elected legislators are sworn in and the Committee on Constitutional Affairs is formed. The situation underscores the political maneuvering surrounding the composition of the new Senate.
Officials within the ruling coalition believe securing Villaverde’s approval will be challenging. “There’s a feeling that not only did the radicals not want to pay the political cost, but some within our own coalition have been reluctant to offer the kind of goodwill that the President’s office has been showing towards the bloc,” one source within La Libertad Avanza explained.
Villaverde will not be the only deputy resigning this week to pursue a Senate seat. Nadia Márquez and Emilia Orozco, also newly elected senators from La Libertad Avanza, will also submit their resignations. Gabriela Muñoz and Eliana Bruno will fill their seats until 2027. Natalia Chemor will take Villaverde’s place in the Chamber of Deputies.
Diego Santilli of the PRO bloc, now Minister of the Interior, will also resign, with Rubén Torres assuming his position. Silvia Lospennato will transition to the Buenos Aires legislature, with Lorena Petrovich set to take her place in the Chamber of Deputies; it remains unclear whether Petrovich will align with the PRO bloc or a different group.
Several Peronist lawmakers will also be stepping down. Itai Hagman, who had a mandate until 2027, will assume a new role on the Fuerza Patria list, with Javier Andrade completing his term. Martín Soria, recently sworn in as a senator, will be replaced by Marcelo Mango.
Carlos D’Alessandro, formerly of La Libertad Avanza and now head of the Coherencia bloc, will also resign to take a legislative position in San Luis, with Claudio Álvarez filling his seat.
