tel Aviv’s Maccabi basketball club is reportedly on the verge of a coaching change amid a struggling season in the EuroLeague.Discussions to dismiss head coach Oded Katash began following a fan disruption after a recent Israeli League win, but escalated after a notable EuroLeague loss to Emporio Armani Milan on November 22nd [[1]]. The move comes as Maccabi currently ranks 19th in the 24-team EuroLeague with a record of 3-10, and a key vote regarding the return of EuroLeague games to Israel is expected on November 27th.
Tel Aviv’s Maccabi basketball team is preparing to dismiss its head coach, Oded Katash, according to reports.
Discussions regarding the 51-year-old coach’s removal began after a recent Israeli League victory against Hapoel Holon. A post-game meeting was disrupted by angry fans who learned of the potential change and rushed the meeting with protest signs.
However, the situation reached a breaking point following another EuroLeague loss on Wednesday, November 22nd, where Maccabi suffered a significant defeat, 88-102, against Emporio Armani Milan in the third quarter. This loss highlighted the team’s struggles and fueled calls for a leadership change.
Following the game, a member of the club’s management reportedly confronted Katash with harsh criticism, accusing him of damaging the team. The exchange occurred near the team’s locker room and was overheard by players, according to reports. Such internal conflict can significantly impact team morale and performance.
Ioannis Sfairopoulos, who previously coached Belgrado’s Crvena Zvezda this season, is currently considered the leading candidate to replace Katash.
Reports indicate that Sfairopoulos maintains a positive relationship with Maccabi’s leadership and is expected to be offered the position. Notably, Katash originally replaced Sfairopoulos in 2022 after fan discontent led to Sfairopoulos’s departure.
Maccabi’s next EuroLeague game is scheduled for December 4th in Kaunas against Žalgiris.
Currently holding a record of 3 wins in 13 EuroLeague games, Maccabi is ranked 19th, near the bottom of the tournament standings. This poor performance underscores the urgency for change within the organization.
This EuroLeague season has already seen several coaching changes, with Crvena Zvezda, Belgrade’s Partizan, Emporio Armani Milan, and Barcelona all replacing their head coaches. Frequent coaching changes can indicate instability within a league and the pressure to achieve immediate results.
A vote is scheduled for November 27th to determine whether EuroLeague games can return to Israel. If approved, the next game in Tel Aviv is planned for December 4th, featuring Tel Aviv’s Hapoel hosting Vilerbano ASVEL in Israel’s capital.
