French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned threats made by former U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on European nations, a move seemingly intended to facilitate the potential acquisition of Greenland. Macron affirmed that Europe would respond with a unified front to any such measures.
“These tariff threats are unacceptable and have no place in this context,” Macron wrote on X, formerly Twitter, in both French and English, according to reports from AFP on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

Macron stressed that Europe would deliver a coordinated response. He underscored the importance of upholding European sovereignty.
“Europe will respond in a united and coordinated manner if these threats are confirmed,” he stated.
“We will ensure that European sovereignty is upheld,” Macron added.
He indicated that European nations are currently in communication regarding Trump’s statements. “It is in this spirit that I will be in contact with our European partners,” he said.
Trump had previously stated that, beginning in February 2026, select European countries would face a 10 percent tariff, escalating to 25 percent by June 1, contingent upon the completion of a deal to acquire Greenland.
