French President Emmanuel Macron has congratulated Sandfall Interactive on the resounding success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 at this week’s The Game Awards, where the title shattered records by taking home a remarkable number of accolades. The role-playing game secured the coveted Game of the Year award, alongside wins for Best Indie Game, Best Indie Debut, Best Art Direction, Best Soundtrack, Best RPG, Best Narrative, Best Game Direction, and Best Performance (for Jennifer English), from a total of 13 nominations.
The game was nominated in several other categories but didn’t win: Best Audio Design, which went to Battlefield 6, and the Players’ Voice award, claimed by Wuthering Waves.
President Macron commented on the win via an Instagram post, stating, “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has just been named Game of the Year in Los Angeles. A historic first for a French title! A great source of pride for Montpellier and for France. Congratulations to the team at Sandfall Interactive. For future generations and those who will follow!” This recognition underscores the growing influence of French studios in the global gaming landscape.
This isn’t the first time Macron has publicly acknowledged Clair Obscur. Earlier this year, he extended his congratulations to the development team on the game’s sales performance, noting: “One million copies sold, and it’s currently one of the highest-rated games in history—and yes, it’s French. Congratulations to Sandfall Interactive and all the creators of Expedition 33. You are a brilliant example of French audacity and creativity.”
The French President’s consistent attention to domestically produced video games highlights their increasing economic importance, representing a significant contribution to the country’s GDP.
