Funchal, Madeira is preparing for its annual Carnival celebrations, which will run from February 11-22, 2026. The festivities, a tradition dating back to the 16th century, are expected to draw thousands of visitors to the island, offering a vibrant blend of cultural events and lively street performances.

The heart of the Carnival will be in Funchal, with two main parades taking center stage. The Allegoric Parade, a dazzling display of elaborate costumes and samba rhythms, is scheduled for the evening of February 14th, beginning at 8 p.m. Near the Pestana CR7 Hotel and continuing along Avenida do Mar to Praça da Autonomia. The Cortejo Trapalhão, a satirical parade, will follow on February 17th at 4 p.m. More details about the Carnival are available here.

According to reports, Avenida Sá Carneiro is already bustling with activity in anticipation of the celebrations. The Madeira Carnival is unique, blending centuries-old traditions with modern flair, and is considered a precursor to the famous Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

Beyond the parades, the city center, particularly Avenida Arriaga, will host daily entertainment starting February 11th, including carnival music, shows, and performances by philharmonic bands. Activities for children, such as face painting and games, will also be available. A Children’s Carnival parade is planned for February 13th, starting at 11:00 a.m. In the Municipal Gardens.

The local municipality is reinforcing urban cleaning efforts in the Funchal city center to accommodate the expected crowds. The weather forecast predicts partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures during the Carnival period, offering favorable conditions for outdoor festivities. A full program of events can be found here.

Tickets for seated grandstand viewing of the Saturday night parade are available for €20, while standing room along the parade route is free. The event underscores Madeira’s commitment to cultural tourism and its ability to host large-scale international events.
