A large-scale search and rescue operation in teh Baltic Sea has been called off after a man fell overboard from a passenger ferry on Sunday. The incident, involving the “Skania” ferry traveling between Sweden and Poland, underscores the inherent dangers of winter travel on the Baltic, where rapidly changing conditions and cold water temperatures pose significant challenges to rescue efforts. Authorities from four nations – Poland, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden – were mobilized in the search, ultimately suspended due to deteriorating conditions and diminishing hopes of survival.

A search operation in the Baltic Sea has been called off after a man fell overboard from a passenger ferry traveling between Sweden and Poland on Sunday, December 28th. The incident highlights the risks associated with maritime travel during the winter months in the region.

The man, identified as a Polish citizen, fell from the “Skania” ferry, operated by Polish ferry operator Unity Line, according to Katarzyna Antona, a spokesperson for the company. The ferry was en route from Ystad, Sweden, to Świnoujście, Poland, when the incident was reported by a witness.

The alarm was raised around 4:00 PM local time, triggering a large-scale search and rescue effort involving teams from Poland, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. Poland’s Maritime Search and Rescue Service dispatched a helicopter from the coastal city of Darłowo, but it was recalled before reaching the search zone as conditions deteriorated.

“We have received information that the search operation has already been terminated,” Gdynia rescue service director Sebastian Kluska told Polish news website TVN24 on Sunday evening. He added that the sea conditions were poor, resembling those following a storm. Unity Line confirmed to TVN24 that the search was suspended at 6:21 PM.
