He is accused of intentionally shooting and killing Brian Thompson, the CEO of the multi-billion dollar U.S. health insurance company UnitedHealthcare, on a Manhattan street.

The shooting, captured on surveillance cameras and widely publicized, sparked a global media frenzy. The suspect initially fled the scene on a bicycle before disappearing. Five days later, Mangione was apprehended in Altoona, Pennsylvania, as a suspect in the case.

Following the shooting, an unusually large wave of public sympathy emerged for the alleged shooter, fueled by widespread discontent over the high cost of healthcare in the United States. Millions of Americans struggle with access to affordable medical care.
