Beginning Tuesday, December 16th, health officials in Maricá are launching a vaccination campaign to protect newborns against bronchiolitis, a common respiratory illness caused by the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). The initiative will offer the RSV vaccine to pregnant individuals starting in their 28th week of gestation. This proactive measure aims to provide infants with crucial protection during a vulnerable period, and vaccinations will be available at all Family Health Units (USFs) throughout the municipality’s four districts during regular operating hours.

To receive the vaccine, pregnant individuals should visit their local USF, presenting a valid photo ID with their CPF number and, if available, their vaccination record. Individuals with outdated information or those not currently registered with the Unified Health System (SUS) are also encouraged to visit a unit to update their records and receive the dose.

The vaccination schedule involves a single dose of the vaccine with each pregnancy, regardless of the mother’s age. This initiative seeks to prevent bronchiolitis, a viral infection frequently seen in infants and children under two years old, which can rapidly progress to severe illness and require hospitalization.

The vaccination program is part of a broader strategy to strengthen maternal and child healthcare within the municipality, emphasizing the importance of prevention in reducing complications, hospitalizations, and the overall impact of RSV on the healthcare system. Family Health Units play a vital role in this process, providing welcoming care, guidance, and access to immunization throughout prenatal care.
