THE PROGRAM AND ITS PERFORMERS

Weathered is structured in five movements—Metal, Heart, Stone, Wood, and Earth—and explores themes of aging and the decay of elements. The work also reflects a concern for the climate crisis, with movements like Metal, featuring tubular bells in dialogue with the clarinet; Heart, highlighting the instrument’s lower register; Stone, evoking the imagery of skipping across water; Wood, presenting a lyrical and mysterious clarinet; and Earth, utilizing a fanfare of brass to raise awareness about climate change and the need to protect the planet.

Martin Fröst is an internationally recognized clarinetist and conductor, celebrated for his virtuosity and creativity. He has performed with orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and has appeared at iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He received the Léonie Sonning Prize and the International Classical Music Awards’ Artist of the Year award in 2022, and champions the Martin Fröst Foundation, dedicated to music education for young people around the world.
