AEK Athens has bolstered its defensive ranks with the signing of Bulgarian international Martin Georgiev from Slavia Sofia, the club announced today. The 26-year-old has agreed to a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Greek Super League leaders, joining a squad already featuring a wealth of established European talent. This move marks a continued trend of Bulgarian players finding opportunities in Greek football, currently with three Bulgarians competing in the league.
Bulgarian international Martin Georgiev is set to continue his career with AEK Athens, transferring from Slavia Sofia. The 26-year-old defender has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Greek Super League leaders, joining a squad brimming with established talent.
Leading the AEK attack is former Real Madrid forward Luka Jović, who has also played for AC Milan, Fiorentina, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Benfica. Jović’s arrival adds significant firepower to an already potent offensive lineup.
The AEK midfield boasts a wealth of experience, featuring João Mario (previously with Inter, West Ham, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica, and Beşiktaş), Marko Grujić (Liverpool, Porto, Hertha Berlin), Roberto Pereira (River Plate, Juventus, Udinese), and Răzvan Marin (Ajax, Cagliari, Empoli). This blend of international talent provides a strong foundation for the team’s ambitions.
At the heart of the AEK defense plays Domagoj Vida, a veteran Croatian international and vice-champion of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The 36-year-old brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the backline. In goal, AEK relies on Thomas Strakosha, the former Lazio and Brentford goalkeeper.
Georgiev, a product of Slavia Sofia’s youth academy and also developed at Barcelona’s famed “La Masia,” becomes the third Bulgarian player currently competing in the Greek Super League. Kiril Despodov plays for PAOK, while Alex Petkov features for Kifisia. This influx of Bulgarian talent highlights the growing connection between the two nations’ footballing scenes.
