Washington D.C. – Ghislaine Maxwell, serving a prison sentence as an accomplice to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein in a sex trafficking case, invoked her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination on February 9, refusing to answer questions before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Maxwell, who was convicted in 2021 and is currently serving a 20-year sentence, declined to respond to inquiries, citing her constitutional rights, according to committee members.

Democratic members of the committee criticized Maxwell, alleging she is attempting to leverage her testimony in exchange for a potential pardon from former President Donald Trump, and urged Trump not to grant her clemency.

In a statement posted on X, Maxwell’s attorney asserted, “There is a simple path for the Committee and the public to hear the truth about what actually happened. Ms. Maxwell is prepared to speak fully and truthfully if granted a pardon by President Trump.”

The Justice Department previously released millions of pages of documents related to the Epstein case. These documents included photos of Trump with several women whose faces were redacted, as well as memos addressed to Trump from Epstein. Trump has denied any wrongdoing.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to testify before the committee on February 26, followed by former President Bill Clinton on February 27. Maxwell’s lawyer stated that neither Trump nor the Clintons were involved in any wrongdoing and that his client could provide clarification on the matter.
