Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met today, December 7, 2025, in Jerusalem to discuss the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the pursuit of a lasting peace, and the relationship between Germany and Israel. The meeting comes as international efforts continue to stabilize the region and address the humanitarian crisis.

Netanyahu stated that Israel will not allow the establishment of another state dedicated to its destruction, but also expressed hope for a genuine peace. He emphasized that dismantling Hamas is a prerequisite for any progress. “There is a chance for a real peace in the region,” Netanyahu said during a joint press conference, “but a condition for this is the complete dismantling of the Hamas terrorist organization.” He also praised the strong collaboration between Germany and Israel in defense and technology.

Merz affirmed Israel’s right and obligation to defend its citizens while also stressing the importance of adhering to international law. He acknowledged that Israel’s military actions have presented a challenge for Germany, referencing the recent, temporary restrictions on arms deliveries to Israel. The Chancellor reiterated Germany’s commitment to a two-state solution.

Merz Visits Holocaust Memorial

Prior to his meeting with Netanyahu, Merz visited Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, where he commemorated the victims of the Holocaust, describing it as a “frightful crime.” He wrote in the memorial’s guestbook that Yad Vashem underscores Germany’s enduring historical responsibility and that the country must stand for Israel’s existence and security. This visit highlights Germany’s long-standing commitment to remembering the Holocaust and supporting Israel’s security.
